Rs 38,400 cr released under Smart Cities Mission till May 1: Govt

Around 7,800 projects worth Rs 1.8 lakh crore granted under the mission.

May 24, 2023: A total of Rs 38,400 crore have been released under the Centre’s Smart Cities Mission till May 1, 2023, says the housing ministry. Of this, Rs 35,261 crore has been utilized, it added in an official statement released on Tuesday.

Numbers available with the ministry also show that around 7,800 projects worth Rs 1.8 lakh crore have been granted under the mission. Of this, more than 5,700 projects (73% by number) worth Rs 1.1 lakh crore have been completed. All remaining projects were expected to be completed by 30 June, 2024, the statement added.

Launched on June 25, 2015, the mission is aimed at providing core infrastructure, clean and sustainable environment and a decent quality of life to citizens through the application of ‘smart solutions’. The 100 cities were selected through a two-stage competition to be developed as smart cities are showing satisfying progress, said housing minister Hardeep Singh Puri. India’s urban future would draw heavily from the innovations being nurtured in these smart cities, Puri added.
