The construction of the Sabarmati Riverfront Park started in 2005. The project’s objectives included creating an 11.25 km promenade along both banks of the river and reclaiming 202.79 hectare of land from the river’s banks.

Sabarmati Riverfront Park: Food court and shopping street

A food court and a shopping mall have been developed in the Sabarmati Riverfront Park. The shopping area has a number of stores selling clothing, handicrafts and souvenirs.

The promenade on the east bank of the river has green lawns, trees and benches. It is also used for cultural events and performances.

  • River Promenade: One of the main features of this project is a continuous two-level promenade along both banks of the river. The lower level serves pedestrians and cyclists and provides access to the water, while the upper level hosts various public amenities. This promenade creates an uninterrupted pedestrian walkway of approximately 11.5km in the heart of Ahmedabad.

 

  • Atal Bridge: The Atal bridge is a unique and iconic structure that connects the west and east parts of the Sabarmati Riverfront. Inspired by kites and the celebration of Uttrayan, the bridge showcases vibrant colors resembling kite hues. It offers pedestrians a delightful experience of walking above the river, with seating arrangements for people to enjoy the scenic beauty. The bridge is exclusively designed for walking and features green plantations.

 

  • Riverfront Biodiversity Park: Spanning over 9 hectares, the Biodiversity Park is located near Vasna Barrage and close to Ambedkar Bridge. It serves as an alternative habitat for migratory and resident bird species. The park boasts more than 5,000 trees, including endangered species, providing citizens with a peaceful retreat from the city’s hustle and bustle. It offers a space for solitude and a chance to reconnect with nature.
