Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park: How to reach?

There are several public buses that ply to the Patna Zoo from different parts of the city. You can check with the local bus station for the timings and routes.

The park is open from 5 AM to 6 PM March to October and 6 AM to 5 PM November to February

It is open Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Monday.

Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park: History

In 1969, the park was initially founded as a botanical garden. The garden was built on over 34 acre of land. In order to help the park grow, the public works department (PWD) added 58.2 acre in 1972, and the revenue department gave the forest department 60.75 acre.

The park was formally opened to the public in 1973 as a biological park and included a zoo and a botanical garden. The state government declared the area to be a protected forest on March 8, 1983, after purchasing it from the PWD and the revenue department.

 

Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park: Exhibits

There are around 800 animals in the Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik Udyan, representing about 110 distinct species. Elephants, tigers, leopards, clouded leopards, hippopotamus, crocodiles, Black bucks, spotted deer, peafowl, Indian rhinoceros, chimpanzees, giraffes, zebras, emus, gharials, pythons, hill myna, gharials and white peacock are some of the species present here.

The park has more than 300 different kinds of trees, herbs and shrubs. Among the plant exhibits are a nursery for medicinal plants, a rose garden, an orchid house, a fern house, a glass house and a fern house.

 

Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park: Initiatives

The Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik Udyan also introduced a number of programs to enhance visitors’ enjoyment in the park. The toy railway, which takes up almost 50% of the zoo, is one of the most well-liked attractions. For those who want to explore the park without walking, there are also battery-powered automobiles. Visitors can go boating on the lake using the  paddle boats.

Education and research

There is an education and research centre at the zoo that educates about different animal species and their environments. For students and guests, the centre holds workshops, events and educational programs.
