September 25, 2023: Minister for civil aviation and steel Jyotiraditya Scindia and Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu inaugurated the newly upgraded Tezu Airport on September 24, 2023.
The minister also said three direct routes — from Itanagar to Delhi, from Itanagar to Jorahat and from Itanagar to Rupsi — will be operationalised soon under the government’s regional connectivity scheme, UDAN 5.0.
Tezu is a small town located on the banks of the Lohit River, Arunachal Pradesh. It is the headquarters of the Lohit district. The town is known for its scenic beauty, with lush green forests and rolling hills all around.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) undertook the development and upgrading work to operationalise the airport at the request of the state government. The works undertaken for Rs 170 crore include the extension of the runway (1500mx30m) and the construction of a new apron for ATR-72 type aircraft, construction of a new terminal building and a fire station-cum-ATC tower.
The Teju Airport was operationalised in 2018 under the Centre’s UDAN scheme. This domestic airport located in the town of Tezu operates through a single runway. The airport is developed on 212 acres of land, and is capable of handling operations for ATR72-type aircraft. It is currently connected to Dibrugarh, Imphal and Guwahati through regular scheduled flights by Alliance Air and Flybig Airline.

“With its increased capacity to handle more traffic, the new airport will ensure better connectivity in the north-eastern region with the rest of the country. While promoting infrastructure development and economic growth of the region, it will also be instrumental in boosting tourism, trade and employment generation,” the government said in a press statement.
