Signature Bridge: History and background
The tragedy of the Wazirabad bridge in 1997, which resulted in the loss of 28 young lives, was a wake-up call for the Delhi government. To prevent such accidents from happening again, the government envisioned the construction of a parallel wide bridge that would alleviate the traffic congestion on the narrow Wazirabad bridge.
The draft plan for this new bridge was finalised by the end of 1998; however, the project faced numerous obstacles, including a shortage of manpower and financial constraints. Despite these difficulties, the government persevered and work on the bridge finally began in 2010 with a new deadline of the end of 2016 set in 2013.
Despite further delays, the bridge was finally inaugurated on November 4, 2018, by the Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, after a long and difficult journey of planning and construction. The total cost of the project was a staggering Rs 1518.37 crore, making it one of the most expensive infrastructure projects in the city’s history.
