Signature Bridge: Construction

Plans to build the bridge were first announced in 2004. The Delhi Cabinet approved the plan in 2007.

The bridge spans Delhi’s Yamuna at the Wazirabad section, connecting Wazirabad to East Delhi.

Signature Bridge: Construction Cost

The bridge was developed by the Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation at a cost of over Rs 1,518 crore.

 

Signature Bridge: Height

The Signature Bridge is the tallest structure in Delhi, double the height of the Qutub Minar, at 154 mts.

 

Signature Bridge: Unique Features

It is India’s first asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge, showcasing the Namaskar Mudra. The boomerang-shaped pylon consists of two inclined columns, which bend mid-way. The upper portion of the pylon anchors the backstay cables and the main-span cables, arranged in a harp-like manner. Four lifts are installed in the legs of the bow-shaped pylon of the bridge. Two lifts are inclined at 60 degrees while two others are at 80 degrees.

Between 2018 and 2021, the bridge witnessed 53 road crashes and 17 fatalities.

 

Significance in a commute

It has reduced the travel time between northeastern areas and the inner city from 45 minutes to 10 minutes. The Western and Eastern approaches to the bridge connect Timarpur, Nehru Vihar, Wazirabad, Aruna Nagar and Mukherjee Nagar on the Ring Road to Bhaganpura on the Mangal Pandey Marg.

  • The bridge is 41 km from Delhi’s IGI Airport.
  • The bridge is 16 km from the New Delhi Railway Station.
  • The bridge is 9 km from Delhi’s ISBT Bus Stand.

 

Latest update

On March 6, Delhi chief minister, Arvind Kejriwal said that the UT will build an elevated road, connecting the Wazirabad Signature Bridge with the DND. To be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 2,500 crore, the 18-km elevated road will reduce the travel time between Wazirabad and the DND flyway by 15-20 minutes and decongest the Ring Road.
