Simple sofa designs that sit well in minimalistic homes

Check out these simple sofa designs that are the epitome of comfort.

In the era of hustle culture and the oversaturation of workers who work all day to make ends meet, they spend more than 8-9 hours in the confines of their workspace. At the end of such days, a person just wants to sit down and watch some tv in the comfort of their living room.

Most people aged 15 and up spend up to 5.3 hours a day spending leisure time. And spending time away from the burdens of your workplace begs for an equally comfortable environment. Most leisure activities consist of activities like reading, watching tv shows or movies, playing games, etc. and require a comfortable space to sit on as well.

6 types of simple sofa designs

First things first, you’ll need to keep in mind what the design of the sofa should be since it should nicely fit into the surrounding theme. Regardless of what the overall aesthetic of your house is, there are a lot of simple sofa designs that can fit in perfectly with any sort of environment with the right placement.

Mid-century modern sofas

The mid-century modern sofas came into being in the early 30s, and they caught up with the trend quite well too. While they weren’t the trendiest of sofas, in the beginning, they were undeniably comfy, and quite deservingly so too. They soon caught up and started growing on people. Fast forward to now, and people still think these types of sofa designs are the most relevant and dependable right now.

This is why these sofas can be found in households all over the world, or at least some slightly altered versions of them. They can be built with all widely accepted materials and given a ton of shapes according to the consumer’s liking as well.

This type of simple sofa design seems very elegant and can complement any backdrop as well, given it is colour-coordinated. They can be placed in any orientation and are quite modular as well.

Sectional sofas

Sectional sofas, which are one of the most popular sofa styles, have become a household name now. These sofas can be custom-made and can be modular as well. They can be handmade by a furniture maker or can be store-bought. Although you have the liberty and freedom of choosing how your couch should look with a handmade option, it is a lot more expensive, and most people who cannot afford it should go for a factory-made option that comes with a warranty as well. These sofas are mainly found in L-shaped or U-shaped configurations.

Chesterfield sofa

Chesterfield sofas have never gone out of style. Being known for their large sizes and rolled-out arms, chesterfield sofas tend to be really comfortable because of their sizable footprint and super dense cushioning. Formerly, they originated with an upholstered deep leather finish and a tufted buttoning design with a nailhead trim. Modern chesterfield sofas keep a similar look but have since been customised with all sorts of materials and sizes.

Settee sofa

A settee doesn’t quite fit the description of a true sofa, but as time passed, these became more and more relevant and were pretty widespread given their fan following and how they just sort of fell into place with the ongoing trends. Settees can be a lot smaller than sofas in terms of width. They resemble benches and originally had no backrests as well.

Eventually, people started adding their own spin to settees and came along with the new settee, with an added backrest too. Settees are also not widely used in living rooms. They are more suited for smaller spaces like offices or bedrooms where they can fit in quite nicely and be used to spend a minute or two. Settees were originally armless and eventually adopted an armed design. They have very small legs too. The padding is very less, and settees are made prioritising looks over functionality, but as time went on, more and more renditions of the settee came into being, and each had a different feature than the other.

English roll-arm sofa

English roll arm sofas, also called English sofas, are known for their low-height arms and ridiculously high back; they were developed in England and were quite popular in London. They have a leaned-back design and a set of large loose cushions that are equally sized. These sofas are the only sofas in this list that have had no alteration to their looks throughout their history and have been kept as a classic due to their incredibly comfortable making and quite versatile design that can adapt to any backdrops or themes.

Chaise sofa

The chaise sofa, also known as the chaise lounge, originated in France in the early 16th century and was geared towards the rich. A chaise lounge is oriented in such a way that the consumer ‘lies’ on it along its length. A single backrest is fitted on a single end along the width of the couch, and a single armrest. Basically, people should be able to comfortably lay on a chaise lounge in a laid-back position along the length of the couch, resting an arm on the singular armrest.

These sofas were originally for only the richest of the richest, the royal families, and consisted of only the highest quality materials and cushioning. Present-day renditions include a more sophisticated looking rolled arm, shorter legs and breathable materials. A few manufacturers have even ruled out the singular armrest in order to make it ambidextrous.

People also have the option to order modular chaise lounges with detachable armrests or go all in and have armrests on both sides. Either way, chaise sofas still maintain their royal looks and keep up with their age-old reputation of comfort as well.
