Tamil Nadu launches housing scheme for construction workers

The scheme will cover over 100 beneficiaries at a total cost of Rs 400 crore and benefit over 10,000 construction workers annually.

Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin launched a housing scheme for construction workers for the registered members of the Tamil Nadu Construction Workers’ Welfare Board on November 15, 2022. According to an official release, over 100 beneficiaries will be covered at a total cost of Rs 400 crore and over 10,000 construction workers will benefit annually under the first phase of the new scheme.

Earlier this year, the CM announced that a subsidy of Rs 4 lakh would be given to registered construction workers to build their homes. The Tamil Nadu Construction Workers’ Welfare Board was formed to provide the members with assistance related to the construction of houses, education of their children, marriage and other welfare schemes.

During May 2021 and October 2022, welfare assistance of Rs 322 crore was provided to over 4 lakh beneficiaries. In addition, over 7,71 lakh workers enrolled during this time.

The Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Board chairman, Pon Kumar, said that the government had doubled the amount for all welfare schemes, which has supported people across communities.
