Why do some celebrities prefer to stay on rent?

We often see popular celebrities splurging in luxury real estate purchases and fulfilling their dreams of owning a house in Mumbai. However, many actors and famous personalities stay on rent. While most of these celebrities have high net worth, they prefer to reside in rented properties primarily because it provides them the convenience and flexibility of working in the city. Besides, renting uber-luxurious properties in prime and posh localities of the city allows these stars to fulfil their lifestyle needs without any long-term commitment of owning a property.

How does the celebrity rental trend impact the real estate market?

The trend of celebrity rentals has contributed significantly to the growth of the luxury property market in cities like Mumbai. The demand for luxury homes from celebrities and high-net-worth individuals (HNIs) and rental rates have increased in recent years, especially in upscale neighbourhoods like Bandra, Juhu and Versova.

Another key trend includes celebrities preferring short-term rentals. Many Bollywood stars have rented flats for three to 12 months. Actor and model Urvashi Rautela rented a 3,600 sqft flat in Mumbai’s Vile Parle for three months between January 2025 and March 2025, as per property documents accessed by IndexTap.com. In October 2024, Shraddha Kapoor rented a 3,900 sqft apartment in Juhu, as per property documents accessed by Zapkey. The actress paid an annual rent of Rs 72 lakh for 12 months.

Properties with a celebrity connection generate interest from potential home seekers and are perceived as a status symbol. This significantly contributes to the rental demand in the area.

Housing.com News Viewpoint

Many people look up to celebrities for inspiration in terms of fashion, style and even brand choices. This also extends to real estate, where the house location, amenities and other preferences of these stars significantly influence fans’ lifestyle. Further, real estate agents find an advantage in this trend, especially when marketing their properties. Potential home seekers who are considering such properties for investment or renting should assess their priorities in terms of needs and budget considerations. They should be aware that such properties usually have high rent and maintenance costs. Further, residing in a house previously rented by a celebrity could attract unwanted attention from fans and media. Hence, it is wise to make a choice after evaluating the pros and cons.
