The long-awaited Yari Road- Lokhandwala bridge construction is all set to begin after the Supreme Court lifted the stay on it. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Yari Road –Lokhandwala bridge was stuck for almost a decade owing to legal issues. A special leave petition was filed by a group of Yari Road residents against the construction of this bridge.
With the construction of this bridge, travel time from Andheri to Versova will become 5 minutes from the 45 minutes that is currently taken.
Proposed in 2012, the plan was to build a 210 meter bridge on the Kavathe creek that would connect a back road of Lokhandwala to Yari Road in Andheri (West). This Y-shaped Yari Road- Lokhandwala Bridge starts from Jai Bharat Society at Panch Marg on Yari Road to Oberoi Springs in Lokhandwala on one side and MHADA road in Four Bungalows on the other. This bridge will decongest the heavy traffic on Lokhandwala, Andheri and Versova.
Two PILs were filed against this project with one being that the steel bridge was flawed and the route should be changed, which was dismissed by the Bombay High Court post which residents moved the SC with an SLP.
The other PIL was felling of mangroves for the project. Residents claimed the project will destroy flora and fauna in the area. To its defense the BMC had mentioned that there will be replantation of trees and this bridge will actually be environment friendly as it would cut travel time, traffic congestion and fuel consumption.
The latest order lifting the stay order came on intervention of an application filed by another group of Yari road residents the New Yari Road Trust who filed a petition that the project was in front of petitioners’ housing society and had nothing to do with mangroves.
BMC has welcomed the order and has confirmed restart of construction of the bridge at the earliest.
