June 2, 2023: The Uttar Pradesh (UP) government is planning to develop a Lucknow-State Capital Region (SCR) on the lines of the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR). Meant to propel growth in some less developed cities of India’ most populous state, the Lucknow-SCR would also help decongest the deeply congested cities of Lucknow and Kanpur.
The plan is also meant to address the uneven development seen across UP’s central area─ as employment hubs, Lucknow and Kanpur boast state-of-the art planned developments while smaller cities have become hubs of unplanned growth.
According to the 2011 Census, 12.50% of UP’s population lives in Lucknow and Kanpur districts. At present, the two most populous cities in the state must be home to at least 1.5 crore people together, say officials.
The cities that will be developed as part of the SCR include Lucknow, Kanpur, Kanpur Dehat, Unnao, Rae Bareli, Barabanki, Sitapur and Hardoi. Entailing an area development of 34,000 square kilometre, the Lucknow SCR will accommodate roughly 29 million people.
The UP government has started the process of selecting a project consultant for the proposal, say media reports. The directive to form a region for planned development came from chief minister Yogi Adityanath in September 2022.
