The Lucknow Kanpur expressway is a six-lane access-controlled expressway that is set to boost the connectivity between these twin cities in Uttar Pradesh. With this, the travel time is expected to reduce from 1.5 hours to about 45 minutes. Expected to be completed by December 2024, the expressway received the status of national highway in December 2020 and is also known as National Expressway 6 (NE-6). The construction of this 63-km expressway will start from December 2021. The expressway project is a part of massive developmental projects including Purvanchal Expressway, Ganga Expressway and Bundelkhand Expressway undertaken by the UP Government.
Two junctions will be made near Unnao, and the Lucknow-Kanpur expressway will be connected with the Ganga expressway through a ramp, enabling vehicles to move on both expressways. The Lucknow-Kanpur expressway is expected to be completed by 2025.

The Union ministry of road transport & highways has given approval for a budget of Rs 1,935 crore for the development of the expressway. As per the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), the construction work is expected to start in January 2022.
The project is being developed in two packages. The expressway will include an 18-km elevated route and a 45-km new section that will be built on undeveloped land. Once operational, the Lucknow-Kanpur expressway will reduce the travel time between the two cities to just 35 minutes.

Lucknow Kanpur expressway route map
The Lucknow to Kanpur expressway will be the first expressway to be developed in Uttar Pradesh, which will be connected to the Lucknow Ring Road for curtailing traffic on the main road. The route will run parallel to NH 25 at a distance of 3.5 kilometres. It will start near Shaheed Path in Lucknow, connecting Nawabganj with Kanpur via Banthra, Bani, Datouli and Kantha.
The travel time between the two cities through NH 25 will be reduced to around 50 minutes.
The Lucknow Kanpur expressway will connect villages including Taura, Neorna, Rawal, Banthara, Amarsas, Bani, and Datauli Kantha.

Lucknow Kanpur expressway construction details
The Kanpur Lucknow expressway project is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 4,700 crore. It is one of the six greenfield expressway projects identified by the government under phase 1 of the Bharatmala Pariyojana.
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated the tender process for hiring agencies for the project. The construction company selected for the project will start work in 150 days from the date of signing the memorandum of understanding (MoU). As per a government spokesperson, the task of preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been given to Aegis (India) Consulting Engineers Private Limited.

There is a proposed 13-km stretch on the expressway from Amausi to Bani village in Lucknow, which will be elevated and help decongest the roads. The expressway will include three major bridges, 28 minor bridges, 38 underpasses and six flyovers.
NHAI will use 3D Automated Machine Guidance (AMG) module for highway development that will double the construction speed. The Kanpur to Lucknow expressway will be the first-ever project to use this technology. It will enable officials to receive live updates of the project progress on computers or phones.

Kanpur Lucknow expressway land acquisition
About 31 villages in Unnao and 11 districts of Lucknow have been selected for land acquisition to develop the project. The NHAI has completed the land acquisition process. However, a few patches of land marked for forest conservation are a cause of concern in taking the NOC from the environment ministry. According to NHAI, around 65% of the land acquisition work has been completed.
About 460 hectares of land would be acquired for the Lucknow Kanpur Expressway project.

Lucknow Kanpur expressway project impact
The 63-km long national expressway will enhance connectivity between Lucknow and Kanpur and reduce travel time. Presently, the two cities are linked via National Highway 25. The expressway will help reduce traffic congestion and facilitate vehicular movements while also giving a push to the economic activities in the region. Moreover, the National Expressway – 6 will boost the ambitious defence corridor project being developed in the state. Lucknow, the capital city and Kanpur, also known as the commercial capital of Uttar Pradesh are the two nodes among the six nodes of the defence corridor. The other four nodes are Aligarh, Agra, Chitrakoot and Jhansi.
The upcoming expressway will ease connectivity to several areas in western Uttar Pradesh. It will decongest the route between the two cities and enable faster travel for commuters.

Lucknow Kanpur expressway: Major localities
Nawabganj
Nawabganj is a locality in the Bareilly district in Uttar Pradesh and offers connectivity via Indra Road, VIP road, and Aligarh Kanpur road. The area also has well-developed social infrastructural facilities and transport options for the residents.
Shaheed Path
Shaheed Path is 22.5-km, four-lane, outer bypass road constructed from Kanpur Road to Chinhat on the Faizabad Road. The road link the Lucknow-Kanpur Road and the Lucknow-Faizabad Road via the Lucknow-Sultanpur Road and the Lucknow-Raebareli Road. The area is witnessing increased property demand owing to the upcoming Lucknow Kanpur expressway.
Banthra
Banthra is a locality in Sikander Pur village in Kanpur near Outer Ring Road, Police Training Center, and well-connected to Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway, Defense Corridor, NH 27 and Banthra Sikander Pur road. There are plenty of affordable housing options for homebuyers. The neighbouring localities include Jahanabad, Kishunpur Kodia and Dhawapur Khasarwara are nearby localities to Banthara.
Azad Nagar
Azad Nagar is a fast developing locality within Vishnupuri Kanpur and enjoys good connectivity to Parwati Bagla Road and National Highway-34. The area is witnessing growing housing demand and has well-developed social infrastructure.

Highway Village to be developed on Lucknow Kanpur Expressway
January 11, 2024: A Highway Village is being developed along the Kanpur Lucknow expressway to ensure convenience for travellers. According to a TOI report, the land has been identified for the Highway Village at the Greenfield section on both sides of the expressway at a distance of around 31 km from Lucknow. Work on the section has also started on the other side of the Sai River. Limited exit passages will be provided on the expressway to allow smooth passage to motorists. The Highway Village has been planned with maximum basic facilities. It will include restaurants, hotels, food court, banks, workshops, fuel stations, including CNG stations and charging points.

Intersections to allow access to ring roads along the e-way
To enable smooth movement of vehicles on the Kanpur Lucknow expressway, the NHAI will build intersections and interchanges to interchanges to link the outer ring roads of the two cities and other important roads. Work is underway to complete the Lucknow outer ring road and Kanpur outer ring road.
Three intersections have been planned in Unnao and another will be built to provide access to motor vehicles from Unnao onto Kanpur outer ring road. A major interchange will be created at Ata village to connect the existing Lucknow Kanpur highway with the upcoming expressway and trans-Ganga city. Furthermore, two intersections will be created at Azad Nagar and Bani in the Unnao district.
