Earthen Diwali diya

As the story of Ramayana goes, Diwali is celebrated to mark the return of Ram to his kingdom Ayodhya after 14 years of vanvaas. To celebrate this grand occasion, the citizens of Ayodhya lit earthen lamps and welcomed their king back home.

So as far as keeping up with the tradition goes, earthen diyas have no match.  However, why they are number one in the list of Vastu-approved materials for Diwali diyas is not entirely based on this sentiment. Earthen lamps have so many other characteristics that enable them stay on top of this list.  Made of organic materials, earthen diyas cause no harm to the environment; their surface remains cool even though they remain lit a lot longer than diyas made of other materials.

According to Vastu, earthen diya is lit to attract prosperity, peace and happiness.

Dough diya

Another material that is not only Vastu-recommended but also has complete approval of ecologically sensitive beings is the dough diyas. In common Indian households, the same dought used to make chapatis is often used to make diyas for daily puja. Apart from the obvious benefits dough diyas offer, they are also a great DIY project for your children, giving them a great opportunity to bond and give wings to their creative side.

According to Vastu, dough diya is lit to get rid of debts and fulfilment of wishes.
