This project will reduce the travel time between Virar and Alibaug by 50%.

The Virar Alibaug Multimodal Corridor (MMC) is a 126-km access-controlled expressway. This project will reduce the travel time between Virar and Alibaug by 50%, according to a Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) study. While the project was planned by the MMRDA, it was executed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). The project will be developed in two phases.

Virar Alibaug multimodal corridor: Project details

Virar Alibaug multimodal corridor is an approved 8-14 lanes expressway.

The total estimated cost of the project is around Rs 55,000 crore.

The multimodal corridor will be designed for a speed of 120 km/h. The project is expected to be completed by 2030.

 

Virar Alibaug Multimodal Corridor: Connectivity

The Virar Alibaug Corridor will connect Raigad, Thane and Palghar through National Highway 8 (NH8), Bhiwandi Bypass, NH3, NH4 and NH4B the Mumbai Pune Expressway and NH17.

 

Virar Alibaug Multimodal Corridor: Phase-1

Phase-1 of the Virar Alibaug Multimodal Corridor will be a 96.41-km highway constructed between Navghar and Balavali. Over 1,347 hectare of land are needed for the development of the first phase at an estimated cost of over Rs 22,000 crore.

Virar Alibaug Multimodal Corridor: Phase-2

Phase 2 of the Virar Alibaug Multimodal Corridor will be a 29.9-km highway between Balavali and Alibaug.

Virar Alibaug Multimodal Corridor: Real estate impact

According to the MMRDA’s study, the Multi-Modal Corridor will strengthen and create job opportunities in seven growth centres in MMR, including Virar, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Dombivli, Panvel, Taloja and Uran. The corridor will contribute to the residential and commercial development of areas, such as Panvel, Uran, Kalyan, Taloja, Kalyan-Shil Road, Virar, Vasai and Pen, along with other infrastructure projects, such as the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), JNPT Port, Mumbai Trans Harbour Link and Dedicated Freight Corridor. While presently, these areas primarily deal with providing affordable housing, with the development of these infrastructures, the realty map is expected to undergo a major change.

Over 33 bids from 14 civil engineering firms have been received to construct the Phase 1 of  the Virar-Alibaug Multi-Modal Corridor (VAMMC) project after technical bids were opened on Thursday, according to The Metro Rail Guy report.

Phase-1 will be developed in 11 packages- MMC-1, MMC-2, MMC-3, MMC-4, MMC-5, MMC-6, MMC-7, MMC-8, MMC-9, MMC-10, MMC-11.

MMRDA has plans to develop a growth centre at Poynad near Alibaug

Poynad is one of the six growth centres to be developed as per MMRDA’s plan. Located near Alibaug, this place shows great promise according to the authority as it enjoys proximity to vital infrastructure such as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), the proposed Virar-Alibaug Multimodal Corridor and the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), which will aid in easy connectivity.
