India has seen the launch of many schemes to aid in the development of the people- especially the four pillars of ‘Viksit Bharat’ as mentioned in the Interim Budget 2024 – youth, the poor, women and farmers. One of them is the Lakhpati Didi Yojana.

What is Lakhpati Didi Yojana?

The Lakhpati Didi Yojana is a Central government scheme that was introduced to financially empower women. Under this scheme, the government has announced to provide skill development training with the help of self help groups (SHG) to over 2 crore women in India. The women would be trained in skills such as plumbing, LED bulb making and operating and repairing drones. With this, woman can earn sustainable income of at least Rs one lakh a year.

When was the Lakhpati Didi Yojana announced?

In his Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the first time spoke about the Lakhpati Didi Yojana.

“Today there should be women self-help groups, with the aim of my two crore Lakhpati Didi, today we are working on women self-help groups. We, while promoting the potential of our women power, women-led development and when I have taken forward the topics of women-led development in G-20, the whole G-20 group is accepting its importance and accepting its importance,” the prime minister said.

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1, in her interim Budget Speech, announced that 83 lakh self help groups (SHGs) with nine crore women are transforming the rural socio-economic landscape with empowerment and self-reliance. Their success has assisted nearly one crore women to become Lakhpati Didi already. The government has increased its target of Lakhpati Didis from 2 crore to 3 crore, owing to the success of the scheme.

How to apply for Lakhpati Didi Yojana?

Women should be part of SHGs to apply for the Lakhpati Didi Yojana. Application forms for the scheme can be taken from the local Anganwadi centres.
