What is provisional certificate? How to get it?

A provisional certificate is a document that is only valid until the university issues the original certificate with the same content.

A provisional certificate is temporary and is used to apply for the next level degree if one has yet to receive the original certificate. An example of its application is in college admission.

This provisional certificate is valid for 6 months or until the original certificate is awarded to the person during their convocation. Specifically, it has no expiration date as it is just a replacement and is documentation that the original certificate is still to be provided.

Provisional certificate: Information present in the provisional certificate

This certificate is a document that contains the following information about the student.

  • The name of the student
  • The name of the course
  • The name of the institution they graduated from
  • The division obtained by them while completing the degree

Provisional certificate: Validity

We know that the provisional certificate is a temporary document that is valid until the university issues the original certificate with the same content. However, there are some points regarding its validity.

  • This was brought to notice by the Delhi High Court after one of the students was refused by the Delhi University because of showing a provisional certificate. However, the candidate already had a genuine certificate issued by a recognised University, so the Justice did not feel that the refusal was sustainable.
  • This is why there is no expiry on the certificate, as it is valid till the final decision arrives.
  • This is the reason why this certificate is necessary for future use, like employment opportunities and higher education.
  • But it is essential to obtain the final degree whenever one gets the time.
