January 5, 2024: The survey on the upcoming metro rail project in Dehradun, to be extended to the twin cities of Haridwar and Rishikesh, is expected to begin soon, as per a TOI report. Once the project is completed, it will enhance the connectivity between these three major cities of Uttarakhand.
According to the ‘letter of acceptance’ issued by the Uttarakhand Metro Rail, Urban Infrastructure and Building Construction Corporation (UKMRC), the survey is expected to be concluded within two months from the commencement date, mentioned in an Economic Times report.
In the first phase, IG Drones, a drone technology and analytics company, has been awarded the contract to carry out a topographical survey to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed Personalised Rapid Transit Corridor (PRT) in Dehradun. The PRT corridor is proposed to be developed from Panditwari to Railway Station, Clement Town to Balliwala and Gandhi Park to IT Park.
As cited in the report, Gopal Sharma, PRO of UKMRC, said the PRT will serve as a feeder line for the proposed metro corridor in Dehradun.
According to Gopal Sharma, the proposal for the Dehradun Metro rail received approval from the state cabinet in February 2022. However, the progress had been pending, awaiting consideration at the Union Government level.
Uttarakhand Metro project
The Uttarakhand Metro is a light rapid transit system to be developed in Dehradun. The Dehradun–Haridwar–Rishikesh Metro corridor will cover 73 kilometre (km). The metro rail corridor will include a 10-km section connecting Nepali Farm with the Vidhan Sabha in the Dehradun district.
