In a review meeting about redevelopment of 11 dilapidated National Textiles Corporation (NTC) chawls in Mumbai spread over 13.84 acre, Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Textiles, directed the government of Maharashtra, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) officials to expedite the redevelopment and rehabilitation process and provide all necessary assistance to NTC required. The 11 chawls are located at Parel, Lower Parel, Mahim, Kalachowki and Lalbaug. As per the DCPR 2034 provisions, NTC has to compulsorily proceed with redevelopment.
To safeguard life of residents staying in these chawls and to comply with the DCPR provisions, NTC has appointed a consultant for conceptualising development potential, preparing methodology, preparation of tender documents for developer appointment of developer and assistance in tendering process of redevelopment of NTC Chawls.
Development of methodology for redevelopment of NTC Chawls in consultation with MHADA has begun. Additionally, the Ministry of Textiles has requested the government of Maharashtra to convert 5 non-cessed chawls to cessed chawls so that MHADA can maintain these chawls in a timely manner.
NTC has 23 working mills, 49 closed mills (under ID Act), 16 JV mills and 2 non-operative mills with approximately 10,000 employees.
