17.31 lakh new workers added under ESI scheme in March 2023

Around 19,000 new establishments registered under the ESI scheme in March this year, official data show.

May 16, 2023: The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) added 17.31 lakh new employees in March 2023, provisional payroll data available with the ministry of labour & employment show.

“Around 19,000 new establishments have been registered and brought under the social security umbrella of the public insurer in March, ensuring more coverage,” the ministry said in a statement released on May 15, 2023.

Data also reveals that more jobs have been generated for the youth of the nation as out of the total 17.31 lakh employees added during the month, employees up to the age group of 25 years constitute the majority of new registrations, as 8.26 lakh employees amounting to 48% of the total employees added in the month belong to this age group.

“A gender-wise categorisation of the payroll data shows 3.36 lakh women members were enrolled during the month. Besides, a total 41 transgender employees have also got registered under the ESI Scheme in the month. It shows that ESIC is committed to deliver its benefits to every section of the society,” the statement added.

The scheme provides workers in India a cover against the impact of incidences of sickness, maternity, disablement and death due to employment injury. It also guarantees medical care to insured persons and their families.
