December 6, 2023: A total of 2.50 crore houses have also been completed under the Centre’s Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) till November 29, 2023, Parliament was informed on December 5, 2023.
Against the mandated target of 2.95 crore houses under the government’s flagship scheme, more than 2.94 crore houses have already been sanctioned to the beneficiaries by various states, Union Minister of State for Rural Development Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti told the Lok Sabha in a written reply.
The Centre has released around Rs 1,60,853.38 crore for the construction of houses under the PMAY-G during the last five years, from the financial year 2018-19 to 2022-23, the minister added. The corresponding utilisation of funds by states was Rs 2, 39,334.02 crore, including state/UT share.
With an aim to achieve the target of housing-for-all in rural areas, the rural development ministry has been implementing the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana- Gramin (PMAY-G) scheme since April 1, 2016. The aim of the scheme is to provide monetary assistance to eligible rural households with an overall target to construct 2.95 crore pucca houses with basic amenities by March 2024.
“The scheme has been able to achieve its major milestones and the ministry is committed to achieving the target of construction of 2.95 crore pucca houses by the deadline prescribed of March 31, 2024,” the minister said in her statement.
The Central assistance under the PMAY-G is released directly to states. Further release of these funds to beneficiaries in various districts/blocks/gram panchayats is done by state governments.
