All about DP Road Project in Thane

The connectivity will be provided using Major State Highway 4 -Chinchoti-Anjur Phata Road that spreads 3,930 metre with a 40-metre right of way.

The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) has given a go ahead for construction of a new Development Plan (DP) Road that will make travel easier between Bhiwandi and Thane. The new DP Road will connect Ghodbunder Road (Kasarvadavli) to Bhiwandi (Kharbao) which is congested because of the presence of local and outgoing traffic at the same time. The connectivity will be provided using Major State Highway 4 -Chinchoti-Anjur Phata Road that spreads 3,930 metre with a 40-metre right of way.  Presently, Balkum to Kasheli is one of the most popular routes to cross the creek. However, the time taken to do this is upwards of 1 hour. With the new DP Road, the time to cross will reduce to 15 minutes.

In this guide, we will elaborate more about this new road that will give a facelift to this location that is located on the Mumbai Nashik Highway.

What are the features of the DP Road Project?

Mentioned are the features of the proposed DP Road Project.

  • Number of lanes: Four lanes each side for easy traffic movement (total eight lanes).
  • Structure of bridge: A 100 m basket bridge and a 60 m wide bridge on Ulhas Creek.
  • Integrations: The DP Road will connect with the Thane Coastal Road, the Virar Alibaug Multi- Modal Corridor, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR Bullet Train) and the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) that connects Kharbao to Taloja and JNPT.

Construction details

In order to reduce the impact on mangrove present in the area, the design shall be in compliance with all norms recommended by the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ). Focus will be on reduced number of mangrove cutting as permitted by the CRZ. Also, the contractors have to compensate for this cutting by planting three times the mangroves on the affected area. Also, before proceeding with the project, a no objection certificate (NOC) should be obtained from the Mangrove cell.

Also, there has been a change in the design that uses a partial cloverleaf at the intersection of DP Road- multimodal corridor intersection. This is to avoid any kind of impact on the Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary.

Other highway projects in Thane

The DP Road was approved during the review meeting of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC). The Thane civic body is also reviewed other projects including integration of Ghodbunder Road and service road, Anand Nagar to Saket elevated road, Balkum to Gaimukh coastal road, Gaimukh to Payegaon creek bridge, Kolshet to Kalher Creek Bridge and Thane-Borivali underpass/tunnel.

In addition to DP Road, the TMC is also focusing on other projects that will uplift the face of the city.

Samruddhi Mahamarg Project

The Samrudhhi Mahamarg project is operational in phases. The final phase of the project is expected to start by February 2025 and this is between Amane and Igatpuri. With this in place, the travel time will be reduced from the current 90 minutes to around 40 minutes.

Of this, a 4.2-kilometre spur that is around 98% complete will connect the expressway to the under-construction Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway. This will minimise the travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur. The spur includes a six-storey-high slope.

Vadpe-Majiwada Project

Under the Vadpe-Majiwada Project, the 23.8-kilometre stretch on the Old Mumbai-Nashik Highway will be revamped into an eight-lane road with two-lane service roads. The upgrades in this project will include:

    • Construction of Kasheli Creek Bridge -817.5 metre, Kalwa Creek Bridge -199 metre and Vadpe Flyover-320 metre.
  • Over 10 underpasses will be present at the project at crucial locations including Walshin, Kharegaon and Dive Gaon addressing traffic related issues.

Impact of DP Road Project and Highways on Thane real estate

Thane is a very sought after and centrally located place with infrastructure development happening at each corner of the city. While traffic congestion poses a big problem, the TMC has approved of the key infrastructural additions in the city that will decongest the city going forward and aid in easy movement.

The infra projects in the city now include Ghodbunder service road integration, the Balkum-Gaimukh Coastal Road, multiple creek bridges, the Thane-Borivali Underpass/Tunnel and the Anand Nagar-Saket Elevated Road.

Industry reports highlight that property prices in Thane have increased annually by more than 6-7% in the last half a decade. This can be attributed to the presence of commercial and residential spaces here and increasing connectivity to parts of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and outside the city.

The Mumbai Metro Line 4 from Wadala-Kasarvadavali and its extension, Metro Line 4A Kasarvadavali-Gaimukh will elevate the connectivity between Thane and Mumbai. According to a CREDAI MCHI Thane report, property rates are expected to increase by 2027 along the 32.32 km elevated corridor that is designed with 30 stations.
