Pune, in the last decade, saw a population increase with people migrating from different parts of India owing to excellent educational facilities and job opportunities. While the city has a place on the world map for its research and development institutions, IT Parks and automobile industries, sustainable infrastructure for easy transportation was missing.

With the average travel time amounting to over 100 minutes a day, there was an urgent need for a safe, reliable and affordable transport system, which led to the Pune Metro project.

Maha Metro is responsible for the smooth implementation, execution and operation of the Phase-1 of the Pune Metro rail project. Pune Metro aims at reducing traffic congestion, pollution, road accidents, travel time and travel costs.

Maha Metro started the Pune metro project in December 2016. The Pune metro rail project Phase-1 is a 33.1 km metro corridor that is divided into two lines. Line 1 has 14 stations and covers 17.4 km, from PCMC to Swargate. Line 2 has 16 stations and covers 15.7 km, from Vanaz to Ramwadi. The estimated completion cost of the Pune Metro project is around Rs 11,420 crore.

Pune Metro route operational lines

Lines 1 and 2 were partially made operational in March 2022 and the project was expected to be fully operational by March 2023.

Pune Metro stations in Line 1- Purple Line

Line 1 of the Pune Metro starts at PCMC and terminates at Swargate. Of the 14 stations, 5 are underground and 9 are elevated. The stations are:

Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi stretch inaugurated 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi stretch on the Aqua Line on March 6, 2024, via video-conference. The stretch has four stations-Bund Garden, Yerwada, Kalyani Nagar and Ramwadi spanning over 5.5 km. With this stretch open, the entire Aqua Line is operational covering 15.7 km in the Vanaz to Ramwadi route.

Two new stretches  inaugurated on August 1, 2023

The two stretches  from Garware College to Ruby Hall Clinic and Civil Court to Phugewadi were inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 1, 2023. 

The stretch between Garware College and Ruby Clinic is 4.7 km and  has seven stations – Garware College, Deccan Gymkhana, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Udyan, Pune Municipal Corporation(PMC), Civil Court, Mangalwar Peth, Pune Railway Station and Ruby Hall Clinic.

The new stretch in the Pimpri Chinchwad to Shivajinagar Court line is 6.9 km and has four new stations -Phugewadi, Dapodi, Bopodi, Shivaji Nagar and Civil Court.

The Pune Metro Line 3 will be 23.3km-long. This metro line will have 23 elevated stations.

Pune Metro: One Pune Card launched 

One Rupay card

The Pune Metro launched the One Pune NCMC Rupay card in association  with HDFC Bank.  The One Pune Card is a National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) that can be used in metros and bus services across India. It can be purchased for Rs 150 plus 18% GST.  The minimum top is Rs 50 and the maximum balance on the card is Rs 2,000. Among the other benefits of the card, members are also eligible for 10% rebate on the Pune metro tickets.

You can book Pune Metro tickets using the Pune Metro official mobile app. The ticket is generated in QR Code form on the mobile app that has to be scanned at the entry gate of the metro station from where you want to take the metro from.

Added information in the mobile app are details about the Pune Metro Stations, facilities they support, fare inquiry, feeder service provider and  tourist places in Pune etc.

Pune Metro: Features

  • Under the Make in India policy, all the Pune Metro coaches are made in India.
  • As Pune Metro provides connectivity through the most populated areas in the city, Pune Metro has explored the underground option.
  • The Pune Metro compartments are made of aluminum as opposed to steel coaches. This change has advantages like less energy consumption, longer life and less maintenance.
  • Pune Metro has plans to install around 11.2 MWp solar power generation on the elevated stations’ rooftops, thereby harnessing solar energy. With this Pune Metro is looking at saving Rs 20 crore every year towards energy costs.
  • For the purpose of 100% wastewater management, an anaerobic biodigester is going to be constructed according to an agreement between Maha Metro and the DRDO. This will ensure that there is in zero discharge into the municipal wastewater system by all the Pune Metro Stations.

Pune Metro Stations: Design

The design of a few  metro stations has been inspired by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The Chhatrapati Sambhaji Udyan Metro Station and Deccan Gymkhana Metro Station resemble the headgear worn by  Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s soldiers. This is also known as Mavala Pagadi. The Shivaji Nagar underground Metro Station depicts the forts made by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Additionally, the  Civil Court Metro Station is one of the deepest metro stations in India, having the deepest point at 33.1 m. The roof of the Civil Court Metro Station is made in such a manner that direct sunlight falls on the platform.

Impact of Pune Metro on real estate

The real estate market in Pune, especially those next to the currently in operation metro stations have had a positive impact. According to industry reports, ever since, the metro rail has been announced, the property value in these places have seen an increase of more than 8%. Additionally, rental yield in these places also has seen a raise.

On the other hand, there are also places in Pune which already command a premium. In such places, the impact of the Pune Metro is yet to be ascertained. But, experts believe that even in such areas, once the Pune Metro is fully operational, there will be a shift in the market prices. This is because, these help decongest the city, save time and pollution.

Maha Cabinet approves extension of Pune Metro Phase-2

The Maharashtra Cabinet on March 11, 2024 approved extension of Pune Metro Phase-2 from Vanaz to Chandni Chowk on one side and Ramwadi to Wagholi on the other. The total extension will be around 12.75 km. While the Vanaz to Chandni Chowk stretch will have 2 elevated stations the Ramwadi to Wagholi will have 11 elevated stations. The total project is estimated to be around Rs 3756.58 crore. DPR – 1 of the project has been submited to the government.

March 4, 2024

PM Modi to lay the foundation stone extension of Pune Metro Phase-1 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 6, 2024 will lay the foundation stone for the extension of Pune Metro Phase-1 between Pimpri Chinchwad Metro and Nigdi. This will be done through video conferencing.

The Centre in late 2023 approved the extension of Pune Metro from Pimpri to Nigdi.  The Pune Metro extension will spread over 4.413 km and will have three stations Chinchwad, Akurdi and Nigdi.  These will be elevated metro stations.

The extension will help decongest road traffic and provide seamless, easy and comfortable connectivity, the PMO said.

Pune Metro increases frequency in Line-1 and Line -2

Starting January 1, 2024, the Pune Metro is adding a total of 63 more trips in its lines Metro 1 and Metro 2. While Metro Line -1  will have an extra 32 trips, Metro Line-2 will have an extra 31 trips.  Thus, the Pune Metro Line-1 will have a total of 112 trips and Pune Metro Line-2 will have a total of 111 trips.
