May 3, 2023: Andhra Pradesh chief minister Jagan Mohan Reddy laid the foundation stone for the development of the Bhogapuram International Airport today. To be developed in three phases, the airport would become a growth engine for the development of the state and play a key role in the rise of tourism in the Northern Andhra region, the ministry of civil aviation said in a statement.
To be developed at Rs 4,592 crore, Phase-1 of the project will serve 6 million passengers per annum (MPPA). In Phase-2, the capacity of the airport will be increased up to 12 MPPA. With the completion of Phase-3, the airport would have the total capacity of serving 18 MPPA.
The total land area of the airport will be over 2,203 acre, with the CAT-I enabled runaway spread across 3,800 metre. The airport will also feature a cargo terminal speared across in 5000 square metre.
In December 2022, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Andhra Pradesh government stating that the state will transfer land for the project in the name of the authority without any stamp duty or mutation fee or any other charges or fee within six months. The MoU also said that the civil enclave at Visakhapatnam would be closed for 30 years from the date of start of operations of the new airport.
An MoU between the ministry of civil aviation and airport developer GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited (was signed in March this year for reserved services at the airport.
