Kolkata Metro completes maiden run under Hooghly River

According to KMRC, commercial operations may begin on a truncated section by the end of 2023

Kolkata Metro on April 12, 2023 completed its under-river maiden run from the 520-metre tunnel below the Hooghly river. Twin tunnels of 520-metre have been built 13 metres below the river bed, connecting Mahakaran (BBD Bag) on the eastern banks of Hooghly with Howrah station on the western banks. Howrah station is the deepest metro station in India at 33 metres below the surface.

With the completion of the five-minute, under-river metro train journey, Kolkata joined the likes of cities such as London, Paris, New York, Shanghai and Cairo, which have trains operating under the rivers Thames, Seine, Hudson, Huangpu, and Nile, respectively.

Later, another metro train made the same journey. The two trains will be used in extended trails on the Esplanade – Howrah Maidan section in the next few months.

Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) expects to complete the trials in five to seven months and obtain safety approval to commence commercial operations on the truncated section by the end of 2023.

With challenges to resolve between Sealdah and Esplanade, where the ground had caved in, KMRC and metro authorities are planning to operate a truncated 4.8-km service between Esplanade – Howrah Maidan.
