The Bengaluru Metro rail project is on track and will complete 175 km of connectivity in the city by June 2025, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd., managing director Anjum Parwez said on November 18, 2022.
As a part of the metro project’s second and third phases, the city will have 314 km of Metro connectivity by 2041. The development of the Metro lines near the airport is also progressing, Parwez said while speaking at a session on ‘the future of mobility’ at the Bengaluru Tech Summit 2022.
The biggest challenges in urban mobility are the integration of multi-modal transport systems and to urge people to avail of public transport facilities instead of personal vehicles. Urban India was the most neglected until the 1990s as urban planning was not in sync with connectivity or mobility issues, he further added.
According to Parwez, BMRCL is getting support from start-ups in mobility to ensure last-mile connectivity for commuters. The agency is collaborating with mobility providers to get people to reach the nodal point and commute to their workplaces, he said.
Bangalore’s Namma Metro recently went digital with its payment options including use of QR code scanners and UPI-based payment options which received good response from customers. There is no need for passengers stand in queues to buy tickets or cards.
BMRCL is in talks with the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) to have bus stops at Metro stations to enable commuters switch between the two modes of transportation.
