Around 2.21 lakh beneficiaries have been served notices by the Bihar state government for not completing construction of their houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana Gramin (PMAY-G), even after the full amount of Rs 1.20 lakh per unit had been transferred in the beneficiary account.
The Bihar government has served 94,027 beneficiaries with ‘red notices’, according to which the state government will take action against them. Around 1,27,463 beneficiaries were issued ‘white notices’, which will serve as warning to the people and direct them to complete the construction under the PMAYG scheme immediately. These PMAYG beneficiaries belong to Gaya, East Champaran, Madhubani, Begusarai, Nawada, Araria and Madhepura, Kishanganj and Buxar.
The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs launched the PMAY-G, a flagship programme of the Centre to provide affordable housing for all. The goal of PMAY Gramin / PMAY rural is to provide a pucca house with basic amenities to all homeless people and people living in kutcha and dilapidated houses by 2024.
The Centre and the state share the cost of PMAY Gramin units in a 60:40 ratio, with Centre paying 60% and state government paying 40% with assistance being Rs 1.20 lakh per unit, in plain areas. In the Himalayan states, north-eastern states and in Jammu and Kashmir, the sharing ratio is 90:10 with Rs 1.30 lakh per unit of assistance given. Cost of PMAY-G units in union territories is entirely borne by the Centre.
