BMRCL to open 40 KM of Metro lines under Phase 2 in 2023

The metro routes will connect major IT hubs, such as Whitefield and Electronics City.

Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) is planning to open metro lines of 40 km under Phase 2, CM Basavaraj Bommai announced in a tweet on January 4, 2023. This latest phase of the Namma metro project covers major IT corridors such as Whitefield and Electronics City. Karnataka government is planning to launch the second phase of Bangalore metro operations, he said.

As per the plans, two metro lines – 15-km extension of Purple Line from Baiyappanahalli to Whitfield and the 19-km new Yellow Line from R.V. Road to Bommasandra will be opened. The BMRCL has constructed a metro-cum-road flyover between Ragigudda and Silk Board, which is a part of the Electronics City metro line. It has also partially started trials on the Whitefield metro line.

Other metro routes that are expected to be operational include the Kengeri to Challaghatta section of the Purple line along the Mysuru Road and the Hesarghatta Cross to Madavara on the Green line on Tumakuru Road. The two metro lines will cover a distance of over four kilometres.

Currently, a 55-km metro line is operational in the city. Under Phase 2, BMRCL is developing a network of 72 km, including Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara, with a 14-km tunnel network. Construction of a 55 km metro line under Phase 2A and B is underway. It will connect Central Silk Board to Kempegowda International Airport via K.R. Puram, Nagawara and Hebbal.

In December 2022, the CM announced that Metro operations to the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru will start by the end of 2023. The infrastructural work is in progress at a rapid pace, he said.
