The Chennai Metro network is witnessing an expansion, providing enhanced connectivity to different parts of the city. The Chennai Metro Phase-1 project covers 45.1 km of metro lines, including the 23.1 km Chennai Airport – Washermanpet section (Blue Line) and 22 km Chennai Central – St. Thomas Mount section (Green Line). The Chennai Metro Phase-2 project comprises three lines covering a total of 116.1 km. The development of the Chennai Metro Phase-2 is picking up pace, especially the Madhavaram to Sholliganallur section covering 44.6 km. This project includes the development of tracks for driverless trains.

The upcoming Phase-2 project is expected to boost the integration of the Chennai Metro network, enabling easy access across the city and surrounding areas.

Lighthouse to Poonamallee section likely to open by end of 2027

The Chennai Metro corridor connecting Lighthouse to Poonamallee is expected to open by the end of 2027, enhancing connectivity for those travelling from the west to the eastern part of the city. The CMRL plans to open other corridors in phases, with Poonamallee to Porur junction expected to commence operations by the end of 2025. The section from Porur to Powerhouse is expected to open in the following year, resulting in full operationalisation of the corridor by the end of 2027.

Driverless metro operations to be introduced in Chennai Metro Phase-2

As per media reports, the French multinational Alstom recently said that it has started manufacturing driverless train sets for the Chennai Metro Phase-2 at its Sri City industrial site. The company will manufacture 36 metro train sets with three cars per set and a top speed of 80 kmph. Alstom will also be in-charge of providing trainings to metro rail employees for operating and maintaining driverless trains.
