The City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) has started work on a detailed project report (DPR) of Mumbai Metro that will connect the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) with the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). Also known as the Gold line or the Airport Express Line, the project cost for this 35 km line is around Rs 15,000 crore.
With a daily ridership of 9 lakh passengers expected in this metro line, Mumbai Metro line 8 will meet the Navi Mumbai Metro at Mankhurd. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will develop the metro line from CSMIA to Mankhurd, totalling 11 km. The remaining portion from Mankhurd to NMIA will be developed by Cidco.
A mix of underground and elevated line, Mumbai Metro Line 8 will be underground between Andheri and Eastern Express Highway Ghatkopar and elevated from Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road till Mankhurd. The NMIA is expected to be operational by December 2024. This line will be the first mass rapid transit system (MRTS) connecting Navi Mumbai and Mumbai.
