Eastern Express Highway: Significance

The Eastern Express Highway (EEH) is one of the busiest highways in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Spanning over 23.55 km, the EEH is a part of the National Highway-48 (NH-48). It connects South Mumbai to the eastern suburbs and Thane.

  • The Eastern Express Highway is a six-lane highway that starts at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and goes up to Thane. The EEH also has many flyovers and grade separators.
  • At Chembur, it cuts off from the Sion Panvel Highway at the RCF Junction.
  • Towards the south, it continues as Dr Ambedkar Road beyond Sion.
  • This is one of the busiest roads in Mumbai that sees heavy traffic during peak hours. However, this is also responsible for decongesting and reducing traffic in major areas of Mumbai.

The link roads that connect the Eastern Express Highway and the Western Express Highway are the Jogeshwari – Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) and the Santa Cruz – Chembur Link Road (SCLR). Both the Eastern Express Highway and the Western Express Highway run from north to south and are parallel in some sections.
