Govt plans Rs 7,500 cr Delhi Metro corridor linking Haryana, UP

This project will be the sixth and final corridor of Delhi Metro’s Phase IV project.

January 22, 2024: In the Union Budget 2024 to be presented on February 1, 2024, the government is likely to announce Delhi Metro’s new corridor project with an estimated cost of Rs 7,500 crore connecting Haryana and Uttar Pradesh via Delhi, according to a Moneycontrol report.

As per the media report, the project will extend from Rithala in Delhi to Kundli in Haryana. As cited in the media report, an official said the detailed project report (DPR) has been submitted. The approval is in the final stages.

This project will be the sixth and final corridor of Delhi Metro’s Phase IV project. According to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the five corridors under Phase IV include Janakpuri West to R.K Ashram, Tughlakabad to Delhi Aerocity, and Majlis Park to Maujpur, which are under implementation. The other two corridors are Inderlok – Indraprastha and Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block.

In March 2019, the Union Cabinet had approved three corridors of the Delhi Metro’s Phase-IV, which are now fully operational. The fourth and fifth corridors of Phase IV have been approved and are under construction. The last sixth corridor is pending for approval, which is likely to be announced in the upcoming Union Budget.

The project will soon be discussed by the Public Investment Board (PIB) under the Union Ministry of Finance. The PIB is headed by Expenditure Secretary TV Somanathan. The PIB appraises projects over Rs 500 crore. After PIB approval, the proposal will go for PMO approval and then to the Union Cabinet for approval.

Work on the new corridor is likely to begin in April 2024 and take four years to complete. The project will have equal ownership between the Centre and the states.

As mentioned in the report, an official said that in proportion to the number of stations falling in each state, the corridor is likely to be funded 20% each by the Centre and states. The Finance Ministry is likely to seek the remaining 60% of funds from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) as Official Development Assistance (ODA). The DDA will also provide Rs 1,000 crore for the project.
