March 2, 2024: The Centre has allocated Rs 3,371.18 crore for three road projects that would boost connectivity in the northeastern state of Assam, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari informed in a post on March 1.
The projects encompass sections from the Nilambazar/Cheragi Bypass to Chandkhira, Chandkhira to Churaibari and Karimganj to Sutarkandi for the widening to 4-lane on the National Highway-37 and the National Highway-8. Totaling 58.06 km, these sections fall under Packages-V, VI and VII of the Silchar-Churaibari Corridor.
Envisioned as a 4-lane with paved shoulders and access-controlled corridor, the project aims to provide enhanced highway connectivity to neighbouring states, namely Meghalaya, Manipur and Tripura via the NH-37, the NH-06 and the NH-08.
“The Silchar-Churaibari corridor further strengthens international connectivity with Bangladesh via the ICP near Sutarkhandi, Assam, on the NH-37. This road’s development will ensure seamless and secure traffic flow, fostering regional economic growth and facilitating international trade,” the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways said in an official statement.
