What is black mold?

Black molds are fungus that grow in areas having moisture. They are black, or grey and smell bad and musty. They can impact your immune system by triggering cough, cold, sneeze, eye-irritation, etc. Alternatively, if you feel scratching sensation in your throat, or burning eyes without any reason, check for black molds in your house. These are more likely to be found in places like the basement, or service area of the house, etc.

Identify the source

Before starting the treatment, identify the source of the black molds and the damage being done. Common places where they can be found are rich in moisture.

  • Leaking sink, shower, or bathtub faucets and fixtures encourage the growth of black molds.
  • If house pipes are leaking, they may lead to the black mold growth.

Eliminating black molds

Before starting the elimination process, shield yourself by wearing a respirator to protect from black mold spores. Wear full sleeve clothes so that your skin is completely covered. Next, wear gloves and safety goggles as a layer of protection.

Cover other places and switch of air conditioners and fans to prevent the air transmission of black mold spores. Switch on exhaust fans to push all black mold spores out of your house.

  • Start with testing the moisture in the area where black molds are present. If it is not high on moisture, it’s a good idea to splash water on black molds and wipe them off. This way air transmission will be minimised.
  • Black molds can be cleared by making mixture of one part of baking soda, five parts of white vinegar and five parts of water in a spray bottle. Spray the solution on molds and let them soak for an hour. Scrub the area and wipe off with napkins. Let the air dry.
  • Other alternatives are chemical-based molds and mildew remover, multi-purpose cleaners, bleach, liquid dish wash detergents, etc.
  • Once dry, if molds are not fully removed, repeat the process.
  • Once done, clean the entire area thoroughly so that there is no mark of black molds.
  • Leave the exhaust fan on for a couple of hours so that all spores are pushed out.
