June 5, 2023: An audit by the Indian Institute of Technology–Delhi (IIT-Delhi) has flagged concerns regarding the safety of buildings along the Dwarka Expressway corridor, according to a TOI report. The audit, commissioned by Godrej Properties, has revealed the presence of chloride in water in some structures, which has a detrimental impact on the concrete of these buildings.
The IIT team has observed similar issues being faced by many other communities, basis their understanding of multiple projects in this belt of Dwarka and Dwarka expressway, the media report mentioned.
According to the IIT panel report, the excessive chloride in water corrodes the embedded steel reinforcement of buildings, impacting their strength. The report stated that chloride presence in concrete could be because of chloride in water or aggregate used in concrete.
Excessive chloride was found in two towers at Chintels Paradiso, which had been declared unsafe by the authorities. In 2022, two people died after the Tower D of Chintels Paradiso residential society partially collapsed.
Gurgaon administration directed Chintels India to vacate Towers E and F of the project under sections of the Disaster Management Act. Earlier, a structural audit by a team of IIT-Delhi had declared these towers as unsafe.
