May 10, 2023: The construction of the 18.9-km Haryana section of the 29-km Dwarka Expressway is close to completion. The section connects Shiv Murti near Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport with the Kherki Daula toll in Gurgaon through Dwarka.
Deputy Commissioner Gurgaon Nishant Kumar Yadav and National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) officials inspected the project’s construction work on May 9, 2023. Several issues related to the expressway were also discussed.
The project is being developed at an estimated cost of around Rs 9,000 crore. The express highway will be constructed by dividing it into four parts – around 10 km has been kept in two areas in the Delhi region and around 19 km in two areas of the Haryana region. The construction work in both areas of the Haryana region has been completed by up to 99%.
Both these areas will become operational by July 2023. On the other hand, the work in the Delhi region will be completed in 2024.
According to NHAI officials, two lakh MT of steel has been used in building the expressway, which is 30 times more than the construction of the Eiffel Tower. Moreover, 20 lakh cubic metre of concrete was used, about six times more than that of Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Furthermore, around 12,000 trees were transplanted during the construction, for the first time in India, on such a large scale.
The Deputy Commissioner Gurgaon has directed the NHAI to close all access to the Dwarka expressway until it is completed. The decision was taken two days after an accident that took place on the route.
