The City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) plans to implement Metro Neo for Navi Mumbai Metro Lines 2, 3 and 4, work on which will start once operations on Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 begin. Metro Neo is a trolley bus with rubber tyres powered by an overhead electric traction system. This transport system is designated for cities having a population of up to 20 lakh. This also needs a dedicated route that can be elevated or at grade. While the cost of Metro Neo is Rs 2,000 crore, the cost of conventional metro is around Rs 9,600 crore.
According to a tweet by Cidco, Metro Neo coaches are smaller and lighter than conventional Metro train. They will be air conditioned with automatic door closing system, level boarding, comfortable seats, passenger announcement and information system with electronic display. This will be India’s first MRTS to run on rubber tyres.
According to an Indian Express report, a detailed project report (DPR) and credit line of Rs 1,000 crore are ready and tenders will be floated for the project, which is expected to be completed in two years.
Navi Mumbai Metro Line 2 will be from Taloja to Khandeshwar, Navi Mumbai Metro Line 3 will be from Pendhar to MIDC and Navi Mumbai Metro Line 4 will be from Khandeshwar to the Navi Mumbai International Airport.
