June 2, 2023: India and Nepal on June 1, 2023, signed seven agreements to boost the bilateral relationship in areas of infrastructure, economy, energy, connectivity and education. The agreements were signed after bilateral talks between Indian prime minister Narendra Modi and Nepal prime minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda in New Delhi’s Hyderabad House. These agreements were concerning trade and commerce, cross-border petroleum pipeline, development of integrated check posts, hydroelectric projects and payment mechanisms.
Both the prime ministers jointly inaugurated the integrated check posts at Rupaidiha in India and Nepalgunj in Nepal, built with India’s assistance. The two leaders also unveiled the integrated check posts at Sunauli in India and Bhairahawa in Nepal. They jointly unveiled the e-plaque of the Kurtha-Bijalpura section of the Railway. They jointly flagged off the Indian railway cargo train from Bathnaha in Bihar to Nepal custom yard. PM Modi and his PM Dahal jointly set into motion the Gorakhpur-New Butwal substation 400 KV cross-border transmission line being built by a JV of PGCIL and NEA. Additionally, they laid the foundation stone of Phase-II of the Motihari-Amlekhgunj Oil Pipeline between India and Nepal, extending up to Chitwan in Nepal.
Agreements signed include those for new rail routes, facilities to access India’s inland waterways, training of Nepal’s diplomats and railways employees in India. In addition to the agreements to boost connectivity, agreements have also been inked for building of two new bridges in Sirsha and Jhulaghat, long-term trade agreement for the purchase of 10,000 MW of power from Nepal in the duration of 10 years, creation of new oil pipeline from Siliguri to Jhapa with storage terminal at Jhapa and financial connectivity to facilitate students, tourists and patients seeking treatment in Nepal.
