March 14, 2024: The trial run for Mumbai’s underground Metro Line 3 Colaba-BKC-SEEPZ Phase 1 has begun, marking a significant milestone in the project’s advancement. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) announced the commencement of trials on March 12, 2024, for the 33.5 km long line. Passenger services will be available once MMRCL receives approval from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS).
These trial runs involve testing various critical systems, including rolling stock (coaches), signal telecommunications, tracks, and traction. Currently, trials are underway between Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and Aarey depot. Upon completion of the trials and obtaining necessary certifications, this section will be opened for passenger services.
The trial run, initially scheduled to start in mid-February, experienced delays due to pending work on the shunting neck at Aarey depot and the electrification of overhead traction wires. The Aarey carshed depot, housing 14 trains with eight coaches each, will play a crucial role in conducting the integrated trial run and facilitating communication testing among the systems.
Metro Line 3, also known as the Aqua Line, is Mumbai’s first underground metro, navigating through congested areas and passing beneath high-rise buildings and heritage structures. Commercial operations on the line are expected to commence in three phases, with Phase 1 projected to be operational by September this year, according to MMRC estimates.
