October 4, 2023: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is planning to introduce a new waiver scheme to encourage citizens to pay their tax dues and avail of certain incentives, according to media reports. The municipal authority has proposed an exemption on interest and penalty to taxpayers who clear the entire dues within the specified period.
According to the proposal, property tax defaulters who pay their entire dues within two years will be eligible for a 50% interest waiver and a 99% penalty waiver on the due amount. However, if the default period is two years or more and less than five years, the defaulter will be eligible to avail of a 45% interest waiver and 75% penalty waiver. A taxpayer who clears the dues after five years will be eligible to get a 35% interest waiver.
According to the practice followed for years, a property owner can get a 99% waiver of the penalty if they pay the total outstanding dues and the accrued interest in one go.
The new rules are aimed to reduce the effort to collect taxes and help boost the revenue of the authority. Further, it will help property owners to clear their outstanding tax dues immediately.
