Kolkata Metro launches paper-based QR ticketing system

Tokens will continue to be available for purchase at the counters during the trial phase.

October 12, 2023: To modernise the ticketing system and ensure convenience for passengers, Kolkata Metro has launched a paper-based QR code ticketing system, according to media reports. The trial for the new system began at Sealdah metro station on the East-West Metro corridor on October 11, 2023.

The new system has been developed by the Center for Railway Information Systems (CRIS). All AFC-PC (Automatic Fare Collection-Portable Computer) gates at various metro stations along the Green Line have been upgraded. Once the trial is successful, the system will be extended to the entire East-West corridor.

During the trial phase, tokens will continue to be available for purchase at the counters. However, the QR code-based system is expected to replace the existing token system.

The Sealdah metro station is located on the Kolkata Metro Green Line, which comprises the operational section connecting Salt Lake Sector V and Sealdah.

How does the QR code-based ticket system work?

Passengers commuting through the East-West metro line can purchase non-refundable QR-based paper tickets from the counter at the Sealdah metro station. They will be allowed a 60-minute window to enter the metro system from the time the ticket was issued. If they do not enter within this timeframe, the ticket will become invalid, and no refund will be provided. In this system, entry will be permitted only from the station where the ticket was issued.

In case a passenger wants to exit before their destination, they must obtain a free exit ticket to get access to the AFC gate.

In May 2023, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) introduced a QR code-based paper ticket on all its lines to provide an alternative to traditional tokens.
