Lunar eclipse Vastu dos and don’ts

A lunar eclipse will occur on May 5, 2023, from 8:44 PM to 1:01 AM on May 6, 2023.

A lunar eclipse, also known as Chandra Grahan, is an astronomical phenomenon that occurs when the earth appears exactly between the moon and the sun, causing the moon to be darkened due to the earth’s shadow. A lunar eclipse will occur on May 5, 2023, and can be viewed across many parts of India.

Since an eclipse is associated with darkness, it is believed to have adverse effects on humans. As per Vastu Shastra and Hindu traditions, certain rules must be followed to eliminate the negative effects or doshas due to the eclipse.

Things to avoid during a lunar eclipse

  • Astrology and Vastu experts say that the cycles of the moon can impact the human body. Hence, one must not eat or drink anything during this time as it can create toxins in the body.
  • Avoid stepping outside the house. Pregnant women must stay inside their homes to prevent any harmful effects on the baby.
  • People must also avoid travelling during this time.
  • Do not use scissors, knives or needles during the eclipse.

Rituals to follow during a lunar eclipse as per Vastu

  • An eclipse is considered to be a period of impurity. Hence, people take a ritualistic bath during and after the eclipse. According to popular belief, a bath before the grahan will bring the same result as performing one lakh holy dips in many sacred rivers.
  • Idols of Vishnu and Shiva are bathed on the eclipse day.
  • One should pray during the eclipse. One can also chant mantras or perform meditation.
  • Experts say one should protect food by putting Tulsi leaves over food containers and inside kitchen cabinets. The healing nature of Tulsi will purify the food and make it consumable.
  • According to Vastu experts, the house entrance must be protected. This can be done by sprinkling red ochre (Geru) powder or drawing auspicious symbols like Swastik using the powder.
  • Donating food and essential items on this day of the eclipse is considered good.
