In a bid to solve, problem of police houses, the Maharashtra state government is designing a program. Under this plan for quick, medium and long-term housing, 25 percent of the houses offered under government schemes including MHADA where houses are given through MHADA lottery, CIDCO where houses are given through CIDCO lottery, slum redevelopment, group development etc. will be reserved for police, mentioned a Loksatta report.

This move is intended to solve the problem of police houses. Presently there are 2 lakh 43 thousand police forces in Maharashtra and the government is trying to provide houses to approximately 70 percent of the police. For this, 82 thousand houses are required, which will be given through this plan. The housing plan will be finalised soon. Not only this, taking note of the urgent problem of police housing, in addition to 25 percent reservation, private developers in Mumbai will be given an increased carpet area index if they implement housing projects for police on their own land.
The Police Housing Corporation has funds of Rs 802 crore this year and is responsible for building more houses for the police. Till now, the Police Housing Corporation has built only four thousand houses in the last five years and the construction of six and a half thousand houses are in progress. Tender process for 405 houses is going on. In addition to this, planning of 11, 294 houses are underway. Also, redevelopment of 27 housing estates of police in the various places through MHADA are in the cards.

To provide housing for the police, recently, on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, the Maharashtra government announced home for ownership under BDD Chawl to police for Rs 15 lakh. This was eligible for police personnel, working or retired, or the families and legal heirs of the deceased, residing in the BDD Chawls till January 1, 2011. According to the scheme, the police are eligible to get 500 sq ft houses on ownership basis, for Rs 15 lakh which is the construction cost. Under this welfare measure, the Maharashtra government will bear 70% of the losses and the remaining would be borne by MHADA.
