Kolkata’s Joka-Taratala metro operations begin

The route will provide 12 services per day starting at 10 am.

Metro services on the Joka-Taratala section of Kolkata’s purple line started on January 2, 2023. The section was virtually inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi on December 30, 2022. The train services started from Joka at around 10 am and reached Taratala, registering over 300 passengers in the first batch. Over 5,000 people went on board the Joka-Taratala Metro’s maiden commercial journey.

The first phase of the metro project includes six stations – Joka, Thakurpukur, Behala Chowrasta, Taratala and Behala Bazar. The metro route will provide 12 services per day, six up and six down. At present, the trains arrive at an interval of about 30 minutes. The trains will leave from Joka Metro station at 10 am, 11 am, 12 noon, 3 pm, 4 pm, and 5 pm, while trains from Taratala station will leave at 10:30 am, 11:30 am, and 12:30 pm. The lowest fare on this route is Rs 5.

Construction work on the Joka-Taratala metro route was underway for 12 years before it became operational.

Currently, terminating at Esplanade, once complete, the metro corridor will cover a distance of 16 kilometres from Joka and BBD Bagh. The metro section linking Taratala and Majerhat will connect south suburban areas of Kolkata.
