August 24, 2023: To push the redevelopment of cess and dilapidated buildings in Mumbai, Atul Save, housing minister, Maharashtra on August 23, 2023 directed the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) to issue notices to the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) in South Mumbai under clause 79(A) of the Mhada Act, 1976.

According to the new amendment 79(A) clause, the Mhada will first issue notices for redevelopment proposals of these 68 buildings to LIC. The latter has to submit the redevelopment proposals to the Mhada within six months.

If LIC fails to revert within the deadline, the occupants of these buildings will be given an opportunity to submit the redevelopment proposal within six months. If this also doesn’t materialise, Mhada can acquire the land and undertake redevelopment as per 79(A) clause in the Mhada Act.

Save added that until redevelopment of these buildings are executed, no coercive action will be taken against the residents and tenants by LIC.
