October 5, 2023: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), in a bid to strengthen the socio-economic structure of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), will develop six growth centres in Bhiwandi, Alibaug, Kalyan and Thane districts. MMRDA has set a time frame of 25 years to complete this project.
According to the MMRDA statement, Kharbav growth centre located near Bhiwandi can shape up to become an investment destination as it is located at the intersection of the proposed Virar-Alibag Multimodal Corridor, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail and the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor.
Poynad near Alibaug, located in the Raigad District, will show growth owing to its proximity to the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), the proposed Virar-Alibaug Multimodal Corridor and the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). The industrial growth centres proposed at Angaon, Sape and Amba are envisaged to promote employment, connectivity and industrial development.
The proposed Kalyan growth centre, under MMRDA’s special planning authority (SPA), will contain 10 villages and span around 1,089 hectare. This growth centre is expected to be a hub for commercial, residential and educational institutions.
Sanjay Mukherjee, metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA, said, “The MMR is a robust contributor to the economy of Maharashtra and the entire nation, contributing about 4% to our country’s GDP. MMR is projected to contribute a staggering $0.35 trillion to the Indian economy by 2028. MMRDA’s new initiative propels us toward a future enriched with superior opportunities and infrastructure.”
