April 17, 2024: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Mumbai Fire Brigade observed Fire Service Week by organising the Annual Fire Drill Competition 2023-24. The final round of the competition was held on April 16, 2024, at the Mumbai Fire Brigade Headquarters in Byculla, where additional municipal commissioner (Eastern Suburbs), Dr Amit Saini, served as the chief guest. Prashant Gaikwad, deputy commissioner (finance), Ravindra Ambulgekar, chief fire officer, and Indrajit Chadha, chief fire officer of Mumbai Port Trust, along with fire brigade officials and other dignitaries were present on the dais.
During the event, Dr Amit Saini honoured several firefighters, including President’s Meritorious Fire Service awardee deputy chief fire officer Harishchandra Shetty, deputy chief fire officer Anil Parab, divisional fire officer Devendra Patil, second officer Rajaram Kudale, chief firefighter Kishore Mhatre and chief firefighter Muralidhar Andhale. Additionally, Avinash Shirke from Wadala Training Center received the best trainer award. Chief firefighter Vinayak Deshmukh’s book ‘Shouryam’ was also published during the event.
The demonstration contest winners were announced following a series of rigorous competitions. In the Fire Pump Drill Competition, Kandivali Fire Station secured the top position, followed by Byculla Fire Station in second place and Kanderpada Fire Station in third. In the Triple Extension Ladder Motor Pump Drill Competition, Borivali Fire Station emerged victorious, with Byculla Fire Station and Fort Fire Station securing second and third place respectively. The title of the best team was awarded to Borivali Fire Station for their outstanding performance throughout the contest. Additionally, Vitthal Sawant, machinist, was recognised as the recipient of the best fire extinguisher award.
