June 9, 2023: A stretch of the Thane–Bhiwandi Kalyan Mumbai Metro Line 5 will be constructed underground, according to a government resolution (GR) issued by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
The 3 km stretch from Dhamankar Naka to Temghar, a part of Phase-2 of the Mumbai Metro Line 5 and also known as the Orange Line, was previously planned to be an elevated one. However, it was put on hold owing to the presence of several residential and commercial structures which would have had to be demolished.
The project cost of the Mumbai Metro Line 5 is Rs 8,417 crore and it spans 25 km. Divided in phases, the phase-1 connects Thane to Bhiwandi and the phase-2 connects Bhiwandi to Kalyan. It has 17 stations- Balkum Naka, Kasheli, Kalher, Purna, Anjur Phata, Dhamankar Naka, Bhiwandi, Gopal Nagar, Temghar, Rajnouli village, Gove Gaon MIDC, Kon Gaon, Durgadi Fort, Sahajanand Chowk, Kalyan station and Kalyan APMC.
The Mumbai Metro Line 5 will interconnect with the Mumbai Metro Line 4 between Wadala-Thane-Kasarvadavali and the Mumbai Metro Line 12 between Taloja and Kalyan.
