November 15, 2023: Odisha Cabinet on November 14, 2023, approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Bhubaneswar metro rail project phase–1 from Bhubaneswar Airport to Cuttack’s Trisulia Square. The construction of this project will cost approximately Rs 5,929.38 crore, and cater to the public transportation needs of the residents of Bhubaneswar, Khordha, Cuttack and Puri regions. The Cabinet also approved the engagement of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) as a turn-key consultant for the execution of Phase-I work at the fee of Rs 326.56 crore including taxes. The first phase is targeted for completion in four years.
Earlier, the Odisha government had announced that chief minister Naveen Patnaik would lay the foundation stone for the metro rail project on January 1, 2024. The Bhubaneswar-Cuttack metro rail project will have 20 stations across the 26-km stretch. The areas to be covered include Biju Patnaik Airport, Capital Hospital, Sishu Bhawan, Bapuji Nagar, Bhubaneswar Railway Station, Ram Mandir Square, Vani Vihar, Acharya Vihar, Jaydev Vihar, Xavier Square, Rail Sadan, Damana Square, Patia Square, KIIT Square, Nandan Vihar, Raghunathpur, Nandankanan Zoological Park, Phulapokhari and Trisulia Square (Cuttack). The metro rail tracks and stations will be on elevated viaducts, modern coaches will be deployed and advanced ticketing and signalling systems will be adopted.
Apart from the phase-1 of the metro rail project, the Cabinet also approved 11 other proposals, including the new Ama Hospital scheme, the Odisha Lower Excise Service (Method of Recruitment and Conditions of Service of Excise Constables) Rules, 2023, the construction of Berhampur Ring Road in Ganjam, the construction of barrage over Rushikulya in Ganjam and two individual rural piped water supply projects to Bolangir’s Saintala block.
