Patna metro project: Japan to fund Rs 5,509 crore

The first phase, with stations connecting Patliputra Bus Terminal and Malahi Pakdi, is expected to be operational by March 2025.

Japan has committed Rs 7,084 crore to India for three infrastructure projects, including the Patna Metro rail project. Notes in this regard were exchanged between Rajat Kumar Mishra, additional secretary, department of economic affairs and Japan ambassador to India Suzuki Hiroshi, as per an official statement.

Japan will fund the Patna Metro rail project, around Rs 5,509 crore, along with two other projects, which include a project for forest and biodiversity conservation for climate change response in West Bengal (around Rs 520 crore) and Rajasthan Water Sector Livelihood Improvement Project (around Rs 1,055 crore).

The Patna metro project aims to meet the increasing traffic demand in the city through the new metro corridor 1 and 2, thus contributing to the improvement in the urban environment and economic development as well as mitigation of climate change.

Patna Metro project: Details

The Patna Metro, currently under construction, is a rapid transit system owned and operated by the Patna Metro Rail Corporation. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is the nodal agency for the Patna Metro project. The first phase will have five stations between Patliputra Bus Terminal to Malahi Pakdi. It is expected to be ready by March 2025.

The Patna Metro Project is being developed under a Public Private Partnership mode at an estimated cost of Rs 13,365 crore, including the land acquisition cost to be borne by the Bihar government.

The project includes two corridors:

East West corridor

The east-west corridor will connect Danapur cantonment and Khemnichak via Mithapur.

North South corridor

The north-south corridor, Patna Railway Station to New ISBT, comprises a 23.30 km elevated track and a 16.30 km underground section.

The lowering work of the first-ever Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) segment for corridor 1 of the Patna Metro project Patliputra to Patliputra Bus Terminal recently began at Moinul Haq Stadium to construct the underground section. As part of the drive, the machine will carve out two parallel tunnels for the up and down movement of metro trains under the first phase.

The estimated time to develop the underground tunnel of corridor 2 is 30 months, during which four TBMs will be used in two phases. This will connect six underground stations, Rajendra Nagar, Moinul Haq Stadium, PU, PMCH, Gandhi Maidan, Akashvani and Patna Junction. The 7.9 km underground network will be completed by 2026. A 6.6-km priority corridor will have five elevated stations at Malahi Pakri, Khemnichak, Bhoothnath, Zero Mile and Patliputra ISBT.
