EPF interest rate hiked to 8.25% for FY24; 4 ways to check PF balance

This guide is meant to help you with your PF balance check.

The apex decision making body of the Employees Pension Fund Organisation (EPFO) on February 10, 2024, recommended an annual interest of 8.25% on provident fund amount for the financial year 2023-24 (FY24). The interest would be officially notified in the government gazette after getting an approval from the finance ministry, following which the EPFO would credit it in subscribers’ accounts.

Through PF balance check, you can know the exact amount that is lying in your EPF account (Employees’ Provident Fund account). You can conduct a PF balance check online, as well as offline. To conduct the EPF balance check offline, you can send an SMS or give a missed call to the EPFO. To conduct an EPF balance check online, you can visit the official EPFO portal or download the Umang app on your mobile.

Prerequisite to check PF balance

You will need your UAN number and your PF member ID to proceed with your PF balance check.

How to check PF balance online?

For PF balance check on the EPF website, your UAN must be activated. (Read our guide on how to activate your UAN Login) Listed below is the step-wise process to check EPF balance on the EPFO website, using your UAN.

Step 1: On the official EPFO portal, go to the ‘Our Services’ tab. Now, choose the ‘For Employees’ option from the drop-down menu.

Step 2: On the next page, click on the option ‘Member Passbook’.

Step 3: The new page will require you to provide your UAN number, your password, and answer to the captcha question, before you hit the ‘Login’ button.

Step 4: Once you log in, the EPF home page will show your credentials – name, UAN number and PAN number.

Step 5: Now select a member ID. You may have multiple member IDs, if you have PF accounts with different employers. Select the member ID for which you want to conduct the PF balance check.

Step 6: You can now check your PF balance through the following options: View Passbook (New: Yearly) or View Passbook (Old: Full). You will also have the option to View Claim Status. Select the desired option.

Step 7: You will now be able to view your PF balance. You can also download this file in PDF format.

EPF balance check on mobile number

 

Using your registered mobile number, you can conduct a PF balance check in two ways:

 

PF balance check through SMS

Send an SMS to the number 7738299899 to check the PF balance on SMS. In the text, write ‘EPFOHO UAN ENG‘. The last three letters in the message indicate the preferred language in which you would want the SMS. In case you would want to get the SMS in a language other than English, use the first three letters of that language to send the SMS.

PF balance check through an app

You can conduct your PF balance check through two mobile applications:

m-Sewa app of EPFO

Once you install the m-Sewa app on your mobile, go to ‘Member’ and hit ‘Balance/Passbook’ for EPF balance check.

Umang app

Once you install the Umang app on your mobile, go to the EPFO option under ‘Employee Centric Services’. From here you can proceed with your PF balance check.

What is UAN?

Your UAN or universal account number is a unique identification number. Your UAN is a 12-digit identification number that you use to make enquiries about your provident fund.

What is PF member ID?

Each time you join a new company in the organised sector, it opens a PF account for you and allocates a member ID. This means you can have several PF member IDs, depending on the number of employers you have worked with. Your UAN, on the other hand, is an umbrella identification number with which all your PF member IDs are linked.

Can I check my EPF account balance by giving a missed call?
